Andrea Mastrovito: the creative union of art and business in the project with Marca Corona per l’Arte
The journey that unites the worlds of art and business continues in the universal expressive language of contemporary art.
Marca Corona per l’Arte is the programme that recounts the participatory side of contemporary art, through projects where culture on the one hand and the world of manufacturing on the other meet to generate new experiences in knowledge.
With this approach, every year Marca Corona per l’Arte has engaged and worked with internationally famous artists, including Giuseppe Stampone in the 2022 edition and Stefano Arienti in 2023.
In 2024, the star of Marca Corona per l’Arte is Andrea Mastrovito, with the exhibition and project “MCm — Minimo Comune multiplo” that touches on many areas of interest, including choral art, transformative processes, emerging talents and historic identity.
Andrea Mastrovito. The artist and works
Andrea Mastrovito is one of the best known players on the Italian and global contemporary arts scene.
Since his early days, he has been exploring and reinventing the traditional technique of drawing, seeking to overcome its two-dimensionality and fixity in order to relate it to the cycle of life, the public, and communities.
His exploration is in perpetual motion between multiple binomials such as past/present, history/chronicle, material/concept, sacred/profane, and unity/multiplicity, with the intention of fusing opposites.
A visual artist and painter, Andrea Mastrovito has developed a distinctive language revealed to the public in exhibitions in galleries and museums all over the world: from Queens Museum in New York to MAXXI in Rome and may others.
His biography and artistic career also include many international awards as well as a long series of permanent public installations and his film director début with the animated feature film, "NYsferatu - Symphony of a Century".
These varied cultural experiences have influenced the artist’s style, as he has combined features from different origins and traditions.
In fact, Andrea Mastrovito’s works are profoundly symbolic and are characterised by a constant search for meaning, with every visual detail recounting and developing a broader concept.
His distinctive technique involves the use of salvaged materials, collage and illustrated compositions, enabling him to transform the exhibition space into an artwork in its own right.
MCm - Minimo Comune multiplo. Andrea Mastrovito investigates the concept of intrinsic multiplicity in the exhibition at the Marca Corona Gallery
MCm - Minimo Comune Multiplo (Least Common Multiple) is the title of the new exhibition by Andrea Mastrovito: it is a play on words which, rather than reducing multiplicity to a single denominator, emphasises its potential multiplicability.
In this project, in which he is partnered by Marca Corona per l’Arte, Mastrovito has chosen to explore the concept of intrinsic multiplicity, applied not only to his artistic expression but also to the creativity/business nexus.
Thus, the mathematical principle that highlights the multiplicity which can be obtained from a single figure (“MCm”) corresponds to a similar characteristic of artistic creation and ceramics manufacturing, two other fields where the same phenomenon can be observed.
The result of the process is a large, original participatory artwork, produced by Andrea Mastrovito together with people from the Marca Corona community.
On the basis of employees’ memories and anecdotes and workshopsheld with them, the artist has created a floor-to-ceiling mosaic that juxtaposes drawings and frottage designs on paper tiles to construct a period photograph that portrays the company with faces, objects and symbols representing a history reaching back almost 3 centuries and permanently linked to the world of art.
This shared process forms the heart of the exhibition which receives its only Italian showing at Galleria Marca Corona, accompanied by a selection of the artist’s works from 2009 to 2024 that exemplify the different media most recurrent in his output, all linked to the concept of multiplication: installations created by combining books, photocopies, pieces of wood, rulers, or an assortment of different objects.
The exhibition links in with the 3rd edition of the Premio Marca Corona, the competition specifically open to up-and-coming artists under 35, which this year is entitled “MCm: Minimo Comune multiplo - processi moltiplicativi”.
